  O significado e a influência cultural do património de origem portuguesa 
disperso pelo mundo como resultado das grandes viagens de descoberta, que 
propiciaram o contacto entre diferentes povos e civilizações, são 
largamente reconhecidos. Não só a língua portuguesa conta hoje com 200 
milhões de falantes, como a própria Lista do Património Mundial 
estabelecida pela UNESCO inclui, a par dos 13 bens localizados em Portugal, 
outros 21 de origem portuguesa, distribuídos por quinze países e três 
continentes. Existem, além destes, muitos outros bens com a mesma origem 
que por condicionalismos diversos ainda não puderam aceder àquela Lista. 
Uma vez confirmado o seu carácter excepcional, os novos bens que venham a 
ser considerados Património Mundial poderão contribuir para reequilibrar a 
representatividade geográfica da Lista.

O principal objectivo deste Encontro é o de contribuir para a criação de 
uma rede de cooperação internacional entre especialistas de todos os países 
com património de origem portuguesa, que permita articular diferentes modos 
de gestão e de valorização dos sítios classificados, aprofundar práticas de 
protecção e salvaguarda e, bem assim, melhorar o acesso desses países à 
Lista do Património Mundial, através de Listas Indicativas e Candidaturas 
devidamente fundamentadas.

Este Encontro destina-se a todos os especialistas, docentes, investigadores 
e alunos que trabalhem ou se interessem pelos temas relacionados com o 
património, nas suas mais diversas vertentes.

O Encontro é promovido pela Universidade de Coimbra, pelo Instituto 
Português do Património Arquitectónico e pela Comissão Nacional da UNESCO.

INTERNATIONAL MEETING
WORLD HERITAGE OF PORTUGUESE ORIGIN

  The meaning and cultural impact of worldwide scattered heritage of 
Portuguese origin, as a result of the Great Voyages of Discovery in the 
Modern Age that provided for different peoples and civilisations to get in 
touch, are largely acknowledged. While Portuguese speakers around the world 
number today 200 million people, the World Heritage List established by 
UNESCO boasts, alongside with 13 properties located in Portugal, other 21 
of Portuguese origin to be found in fifteen countries in three continents. 
Besides these, there are many others bearing the same origin, which for 
manifold constraints have not so far been able to enter the List. Once 
their outstanding value is confirmed, new properties that are classified 
World Heritage may contribute for the List to achieve a more balanced 
geographical distribution.

The main purpose of this Meeting is thus to pave the way towards the 
creation of an international cooperation network among experts of every 
country having heritage of Portuguese origin. Such a network should 
facilitate the articulation of different management and enhancement 
policies implemented in classified properties; the in depth approach of 
protection and safeguard practices; and likewise the improvement of access 
by those countries to the World Heritage List, through the elaboration of 
well sustained Tentative Lists and nominations.

This Meeting is directed to all the experts, professors, researchers and 
students that works or have interest on the matters concerning heritage, in 
several different aspects.

The Meeting is convened by the University of Coimbra, the Portuguese 
Institute for Architectural Heritage, and the Portuguese Commission for 
UNESCO, following a proposal made by the Portuguese National Committee for 
ICOMOS and supported by UNESCO's World Heritage Centre.
