Dear Colleague

An intensive laboratory and lecture course will be given at the Chemistry 
Department of the FCT-UNL, (http://www.dq.fct.unl.pt/master/) focus on the 
following protein-related themes: 

(i) Protein purification and heterologus expresion, 
(ii) X-Ray Crystallography of proteins,
(iii) NMR of proteins, 
(iv) Mass Spectrometry of proteins and 
(v) Electrochemistry of proteins. 

In the protein purification module students will learn about protein 
purification and on the basic approaches to reach the over-expression of a 
given gene/ORF, drawing attention to vector systems, cells and media for 
protein labeling. 

In the X-Ray Crystallography module, students will collect diffraction
data on crystals they will prepare. Data will be processed and the
different structure solution strategies will be introduced, as well as
model building, refinement and structure representation software.

In the NMR of proteins module students will learn how to deal and to interpret 
NMR data of proteins with some of the most advanced NMR systems to date 
available for research. 

In the mass spectrometry module students will learn the last trends in sample 
treatment for ultrafast protein digestion for protein identification through 
peptide mass fingerprint. 

In the Electrochemistry of proteins module students will deal with current 
approaches for protein red-ox studies and practical issues, such as the 
construction of biosensors. 

The overall aim of the course is to provide each student with the fundamental 
knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to be able to perform and analyze 
protein experiments, from purification and identification to structural 
information, and to learn to identify new opportunities in applying protein-
related studies to his/her own research.
