Dear Colleague,

The increase in population as well as the expansion of the economic activity
particularly in developing countries has been leading to a significant
increase in energy demand. Security of energy supply becomes more and more a
serious matter of concern for governments, along the environmental impact
that is expected to grow namely with regard to climate change.

The International Energy Agency, in its 2010 publication on Energy
Technologies Perspectives, projects a mix of energy resources and
technologies needed to half the CO2 emissions of 2005 by 2050, which
confirms the importance of actions leading to energy efficiency both on the
end-use side, with a projected contribution of 38%, and on the power sector,
which associated with fuel switching has a projected potential contribution
of 5%. The other options considered tackling CO2 emissions are carbon
capture and storage, projected with a contribution of 19%, increased use of
renewable energy sources with 17%, fuel switching on the end-use with 15%
and nuclear with 6%.

The IEA- IETS, Implementing Agreement focus on Industrial Energy-related
Technologies and Systems, a sector that plays a relevant role in terms of
technology and is fundamental to the economy and throughout the world, has
collaborated with governments in actions related with energy efficiency and
CO2 reduction.

Aware of this reality, the Executive Committee of IETS together with the
Portuguese Group on Process Integration (GNIP) is organizing an
international workshop on “Energy Optimization in Industry and reduction of
CO2 emissions” in Lisbon, Portugal, on 3rd November 2010.

This conference aims at promoting the debate on both issues of energy
efficiency and reduction of CO2 emissions, by bringing together energy
experts, technologists, industrialists, and policy makers, and
simultaneously disseminating ongoing projects launched within the scope of
activity of the international cooperation established by IETS Implementing
Agreement.

The Organizing Committee has the pleasure to invite you to participate in
this event. Please find enclosed a draft of the workshop programme and a
registration form, which we would invite you to fill up and send it back for
confirmation. We would like to thank you in advance for your consideration
to participate, as we believe that your presence and contribution will
ensure that this workshop will meet its objectives and success.

Best regards,

The Organizing Committee
