Dear colleagues,

we would like to announce two open PhD positions at the Institute for 
Mechanics of Materials and Structures of Vienna University of Technology.

Micromechanics of wood and paper fibers:
The aim of this PhD project is to enhance the current understanding of 
structure-function relationships of wood and paper fibers and 
fiber-fiber bonds by integrating experimental characterization and 
analytical numerical modeling. This is to build a knowledge base for the 
optimization of paper products. Therefore, a strong background in 
engineering mechanics materials science, and/or applied mathematics is 
desired.

Stochastic Finite-Element tool for wood-based products:
The aim of this PhD project is the further development of numerical 
simulation tools for wood-based products, such as glued- or 
cross-laminated timber, including stochastic approaches to take the 
material variability into account. Finally, a better understanding of 
the mechanical behavior of these products should reveal optimization 
potential and should contribute to a better utilization of the raw 
material. Therefore, a strong background in engineering mechanics 
materials science, and/or computational mechanics is desired.
