The Department of Chemical Engineering (CIT) is looking for a creative,
dynamic and motivated doctoral candidate to work in a new area of
research named Chemical Engineering for Health Care.

Rational Design of Biosupramolecular Systems for Regenerative Medicine

The Department of Chemical Engineering is located at recently
inaugurated modern research facilities of Leuven Chem&Tech and Leuven
Nanocentre. The Department is responsible for the education of future
chemical engineers and PhD's in chemical engineering. The programme in
Leuven champions a combination of a profound 'chemical engineering'
background, complemented with unique facets of internationally
significant topics. Therefore, you can become acquainted with
product-oriented thinking as an addition to the more traditional
process-oriented education. Chemical Engineering for Health Care is a
new exciting and rapidly advancing research field combining life
sciences, material sciences and chemical engineering.

      Project

Regenerative medicine is a rapidly growing multidisciplinary field
combining medicine, life sciences and engineering and including tissue
engineering and self-healing. In this project you will conduct research
in designing biosupramolecular systems based on polysaccharides,
glycopolymers and hybrid materials for advanced applications in tissue
engineering and self-healing. The emphasis of your work will be the
construction of ordered and oriented architectures at the molecular
level that are suitable for stimuli responsive interactions with cells.
You will learn different methods of material synthesis, characterization
and processing. You will also learn advanced techniques for cell
cultivation and for understanding micromechanical interactions between
cells and different micro and nanoarchitectures. Your work will be
multidisciplinary and part of the new Chemical Engineering for Health
Care research area of the Department of Chemical Engineering and in
synergistic collaboration with Biomechanics Section of the Department of
Mechanical Engineering. You will have opportunity for extensive national
and international collaboration with top scientists in the field of
engineering, material science and medical research.
